Applications from ILEA certified candidates will be accepted ongoing.
Certified Iowa peace officer applicants may be added to the certified list at any time the list contains less than ten names without the need to open the application and competitive testing processes.
Iowa state certified peace officers currently employed by another Iowa law enforcement agency or who has left employment with another Iowa law enforcement agency with no more than a six-month break in service, may request to participate in the lateral transfer process. Upon receipt of application, candidates advance to the Civil Service Commission interview phase of the application process without the necessity of undergoing physical fitness tests and POST test. Previous physical fitness and POST scores may be utilized by the Commission as a part of the hiring process to determine the top ten list.
Under general supervision, a Deputy Sheriff performs work involving general police work in the protection of life and property through the enforcement of County ordinances, local, state and federal laws. Deputies do patrol work, criminal investigation, transport prisoners and mental subjects, serve papers, testify in court, investigate accidents, perform courthouse security and perform other related duties as required.
